LITTLE WINGS AND JUSTIN VOLLMAR SING ABOUT LOVE

This split release originated as a wedding favor. Vollmar covers 'A Girl Like You' and 'Chanson D’Oh' on one side - well, he was supposedly lying on his back during most of the takes. On the other side Little Wings takes a crack at 'Be My Baby.' He’s rumored to have shown up to the sessions with only drums. These guys keep it weird.

Picking up where the Lawless Nursery / Echo Lake compilation leaves off, The Lark sees multi-instrumentalist songwriter Will Ryerson achieve new mastery of an already distinctive style. Song and sound are here inseparable parallels, with Ryerson’s language as colorful as the sonic experimentalism in which he dresses it. Part 'outsider,' part upside-downer, this resembles no other underground pop music.
MICROWAVE BACKGROUND <> LAWLESS NURSERY / ECHO LAKE

This release compiles two out-of-print homemade cdrs.
Echo Lake was Ryerson’s first effort under the Microwave Background moniker. While the instrumental portions of his later recordings read more like interludes, Echo Lake’s contemplative solo guitar pieces feel somehow integrated with the EP’s title track centerpiece, as if the music stretched out on either side of this lone sung song were meant as the soundtrack to the lyrics’ bittersweet summer lake swim.
What Lawless Nursery might lack in structure is easily made up for in sheer musical diversity. Ryerson scrolls through arrangements and ideas like he’s authoring an encyclopedia of the lo-fi. Rock instruments are a new presence, as well as more conventional songwriting. On the other hand, there is also unaccompanied shower singing and an improvised track narrating the real-time journey of a spider across the floor.

Culled from one of the earliest Luddite releases, this is four songs issued on vinyl by the great Great British label Pickled-Egg. Catches the strange secluded feel of our Kentuckiana music making way back in 2001... Feel the infinite reverie of 'La Talking Box.' Probably won’t be getting many more of these.

Mt. Gigantic leaves tiny shards of melody in the wake of its atonal onslaught. This heavily-falsettoed Bloomington, Indiana group makes "difficult" rock music that is more fun than pretense. Old Smiler is the first widely-available release from the ensemble that gig-goers already know as "a ragtag gang of costume donning noise mongers."

The proprietors of Underwater Tea Party records offered to pay a month of Justin Vollmar’s rent if he’d make a record for their label. He then went on a family vacation, sat out on the beach late one night, and made some solo recordings straight to simultaneous tape and minidisk recorders. The results make for a kind of sonic portraiture that sets aside 'objective' recording aesthetics in favor of a more personal, contextual representation of the songs.

The bulk of Justin Vollmar’s work on his side was done in an open-windowed apartment in Bordeaux, France. Some of that ambience has carried over into the final mixes. On the reverse, Microwave Background serves up what is perhaps a more specifically American atmosphere of basement-adapted pop singing. In the end, it’s a great pairing of two of today’s eeriest home recordists.
